Research in Assistive Robotics

Problems with Advancing Technology

The lack of financial support is one primary reason that inhibits the progression of assistive robotic research towards spinal cord injury on tetraplegic patients. Stanford University is a prime benefactor towards this research, but since it is extremely expensive, more donations are necessary before this technology can expand at a constant rate. In addition, political support is also necessary, so the government is able to step in and aid the research. Help of institutions such as NIH can prove to be crucial in advancing spinal cord research. Also, it is socially necessary for communities to accept individuals with disabilities. Building a community where people with spinal cord injuries can live with cooperation with other residence is crucial in advancing such technology. Researchers need the assistance and acceptance of the society before they can release these robots.
