National Fly Off  -  May 18/19, 2007

This is really big -- all three teams were invited to the National Fly Off at the Great Meadows in Virginia.  It was a great event.  The description of the event is here.

Here is a video of activities around the event.

Each team was on their own to do one launch during their launch window.  The adults sat back and watch.  Awards were made around 5pm, with a celebration dinner in Manassas around 7pm.

Our teams flew three beautiful flights.  They were relatively straight and did not have any disqualifications (12 out of 100 DQed). Team 2 came in 24th, Team 1 came in 25th, and Team 3 was 34th.  Not bad out of the 100 best teams from across the country.  Team 3 won a special award for the shortest rocket that flew successfully.  The data sheets for all the teams is here.

Our teams held a feedback session on May 23 to detail our lessons from the TARC 2007 experience.  We hope to put them to good use in TARC 2008, which we plan to win.

Schedule:

Friday, May 18, Registration and Briefing -- We met at Lockheed Martin around 4:30pm and then drove to the contestant briefing. The event was at 7:30pm in the auditorium of Osbourn Park High School, 8909 Euclid Avenue, Manassas. We got there around 7pm for registration.  Bob got an award from the American Association of Physics Teachers.

Saturday, May 19, Launch -- We met again at Lockheed Martin to prepare our rockets at 7am. The teams traveled to the Great Meadows launch site, where we had completed our qualification launches.  Here were the launch assignments
