Lessons from TARC 2007

During our TARC 2007 experience we did some things great and learned some skills.

  • We got three teams to the National Fly Off, with the three ending up in the top 34.
  • We figured out how to use the Aerotech composite motors and developed the skill to build them successfully.
  • We realized how important the wind was in getting a straight flight.  And we figured out how to angle the launch rods.
  • We conducted a lot of tests and developed our operational techniques.
  • Rear ejection of the parachutes from a tube worked OK. Connecting the multiple chutes with a thin wire insured one chute would pull out the other.
  • We developed a check list and started to use it.
  • We integrated several new members into successful teams.

We also left some things undone and have areas for improvement.

  • We recognized the importance of some break time but need to limit it to after we complete the work session objectives.  Limit playing Wolfenstein.
  • Developing the electronics for the air brake rocket will take more time.
  • We need some way to acquire Pyrodex.
  • No testing near trees.
  • Get the development done early so we can test in the fall.
  • Continue to improve our check lists.
  • For TARC 2008, we use a new altimeter from PerfectFlite -- Alt15K/WD Rev2
