Juno and Centaur Explorer Post 1010
Lockheed Martin Exploring Program
Launch - November 19, 2011
Jupiter Moons

Seven members traveled to the Maryland launch site on Saturday, November19. It was a nice day with light wind, although there were gusts to 12mph during the later launches. We had five launches, easily recovered and a good experience. We used both launch rails. Les Cannon came out and launched his personal recently-built rocket (video).

Objectives

  • Test our new BT70 rockets to see how they fly - packed under 400g.
  • Verify the use of the 18in X chutes. Learn to fold them correctly.
  • Use E30-7Ts with Quest igniters - hopefully to 800ft.

Lessons

  • Motors - The E30-7T motors worked OK. We failed twice to ignite one. The other two from that same batch had a delay of 9sec. We have a bunch from the that same batch so we need to watch them (Try another launch).
  • There are two lengths of Quest igniters - we must use the longer ones for the E30-7T
  • Chutes - the X-chutes deployed nicely, but floated in the high gusts.
  • Eggs - One was broken in the egg crate, one broke after we took it out of the rocket, and one broke in the dual-egg capsule. The egg capsule worked OK on the first flight, but was repacked for the second flight and there might have been some room left in the capsule.
  • Booster - The blue rocket had a definite wobble during powered ascent. The connector between the cargo unit and the booster is too small and not tight. There may be some fin alignment issue.
  • Both teams did great in recording the data of their launches.
  • Where is the stool to reach the top of the 7ft launch tower?

Weight-Altitude ComparisonAltitude to Weight (Excel format)

This chart plots the five launches, their altitude to their weight. The linear average will help us decide the target weight for future launches. One gram reduces the altitude by 2ft. This is a start, but we need lots more data.
