Ice Pond RecoveryEleven members of the rocketry project traveled to the Virginia launch site on Saturday, February 12. All four teams participated. The weather was seasonable cold (40f) but the wind was very strong (11mph to 22mph). We had a few holds for high wind, but some lulls down to 11mph. We used the long launch rail for all flights. The launch tower was angled about 8 degrees with the wind. We conducted four test launches. Team 9215 (Maroon rocket) took a try at qualification.

Objectives:

  • Conduct one test and one early qualification flight.
  • Add weight to the Red rocket (9212) to bring down the F24-7W height.
  • Continue to work with AeroTech igniter clip.

Lessons and Actions:

  • We had a big problem with the wind. It cause the rockets to land far away in trees and ponds. It seemed to cause the parachute to float and remain aloft too long. We need to look into ways to adjust the chutes.
  • The launch tower was angled about 8 degree with the wind. This seemed to correct cocking into the wind. The four E30 flights were straight up.
  • The flights with the E30-7T were around the 750ft. The wind did not seem to affect the altitudes.
  • Team 9212 again used an F24-7W in their heavier Red rocket. The igniter sputtered. It took off very slow and cocked into the wind. It went way too low, and almost crashed, with the chute deploying 40ft above the ground (a.k.a. miracle rocket). They plan to build a lighter booster and go with the E30-7T.
  • None of the eggs cracked.
  • The AeroTech igniter clip worked OK, but was difficult to put the copper strip into the clip. The strip needs a little "s" bend at the end. We had to replace one igniter. One had a long delay for ignition on the Purple rocket. The F24 igniter sputtered and
  • We recovered all the rockets from the pond and the trees. The teams worked together and were very resourceful. The NAR members provided critical help with a long pole.
