Launch - March 27, 2010

Five members traveled to the NOVAAR launch site at Great Meadow, VA on Saturday, March 27.  This was our third attempt to qualify for TARC 2010.  It was sunny, temperature around 70 F.  Wind was variable from calm to about 5mph out of the south west.  We used both launch rails and had several NAR members observe and time the launches.  We bought three motors from Performance Hobbies at the launch site. We conducted 8 launches in four hours.

At first we had some problems getting launched, but in the end we had great results. Team 8189 had a qualification score of 2 and Team 8296 had a qualification score of 7.  Team 8296 had a test flight with a score of 1.  It is possible all four teams will be going to the National Competition in May.

Objectives

  • Complete two qualification launches for team 8188 and one qualification launch for team 8296.
  • Team 8296 needs to try an F32-6T again.
  • All the streamers had been ironed with starch.
  • Team 8189 assembled their F24-4W motors on Wednesday, March 24.

Lessons

  • For team 8296, the F32-6T worked great.
  • For team 8189, the F24-4W worked great.
  • Three 7x70 streamers really helped slow the descent.
  • Team 8296's booster may be coming down too fast.
  • It seemed like there was some help from thermals later in the day.
  • We had several failed ignitions with the F24-4W.  The alligator clips were rusty, but not sure that was the only problem.  We need to use fresh igniters with big heads.  We may want to experiment with adding Pyrodex to standard copper head igniters.
