Explorer Post 1010
Lockheed Martin Exploring Program
Launch - March 21, 2009

Members of all thee teams traveled to the Maryland launch site.  It was clear, a little cool, but almost no wind.  We had some successes, and some problems.  No eggs were broken.  This was our last test launch.  Next week we start qualification launches!

Objectives

  • Flight test RPE (team 7157) with F40-4T and -7T reloadable and adjust the weight.
  • Flight test different configurations of the Phoenix (team 7159) with F39-6T reloadable.
  • Flight test the Kaboom (team 7158) with F52-5T reloadable, with different timer ejections.
  • Build and use a second launch rail.

Lessons

  • The 2nd launch rail worked OK, liked the blast deflector.
  • If you have a false launch on the altimeter, you may loose one launch data set.
  • The RPE needs to use longer delay for apogee (-7T).  Also needs a bigger chute or put more weight into the booster, not the nose cone. It also wobbled - need to make sure the connection between cargo and booster is firm.
  • The Phoenix needs to be 500 grams. You must not wrap the streamer.
  • The Kaboom needs to have a longer delay (-8T).

Launches (altimeter data)

Rocket Engine Cargo Chute Weight Results Comments
Kaboom
Launch 1
F52-5T egg,
altimeter G
24" choke and
15"
777g 623ft, 50sec
(video)
Nice flight until early ejection, nose cone came off, timer ejection at 4.6sec failed to fire because wire loose, DQ.
Kaboom
Launch 2
F52-5T egg,
altimeter G
24" choke and
15"
777g about 600ft,
18sec (video)
Straight flight, but early ejection again, cargo chute broke off, timer ejection at 4.6sec fired, altimeter battery came out and lost data, DQ.
RPE
Launch 1
F40-7T egg,
altimeter G
24"X and
15"
832g 784ft, 37sec
(video)
Nice flight, but we lost the altimeter data because it was overwritten, Score 50.
RPE
Launch 2
F40-4T egg,
altimeter G
24"X and
15"
845g 552ft, 29sec
(video)
Nice flight, but early ejection, came down too quick.
RPE
Launch 3
F40-4T egg,
altimeter G
24"X and
15"
760g 591ft, 31sec
(video)
A little cork screw and early ejection again, maybe move some weight from the nose cone to the booster.
Phoenix 3
Launch 1
F39-6T egg,
altimeter C
16" and
4x60 streamer
479g 795ft, 47sec (video) Nice flight, but streamer didn't deploy, used light cargo with heavy nose cone, Score 49.
Phoenix 3
Launch 2
F39-6T egg,
altimeter C
16" and
4x60 streamer
522g 681ft, 39sec (video) Nice flight, but too heavy, used heavy cargo with heavy nose cone, Score 81.
Chris Special
Launch 1
F24-4W altimeter 2 16" and
4x60 streamer
458g 789ft, 25sec (video) A little cork screw, broke into three parts, all recovered.
