Launch March 27, 2008

Four members of Team 3 traveled to the National Pike Park for another final test launch before they attempt qualification. There was a little rain but no wind. All four launches were great.  We saw the black rocket base, still hanging 60 feet up in a tree.

Objectives:

  • Test Mark's special rocket from last year as a backup for Team 1.
  • Try an F39-6 and fresh F24-4 in the red rocket.
  • Try an E28-4 on a merger of the Black rocket top and the Orange rocket bottom.
  • We just needed more altimeter data.
Lessons
  • The red rocket really looked nice with the F24-4.  We need to trim 5 grams for a target of 492 grams.
  • The F39 was too much for the red rocket.
  • Altimeter trigger twice in the red rocket on the launch pad.  It may be too sensitive.
  • There were no spikes in the red rocket altimeter data -- not sure why, but it looks nice.
  • The red rocket came down hard.  On the first launch we broke one egg.  After some work on the packing, they were OK after the second launch, even though the nose cone stuck in the ground.
  • Mark's special rocket looked real nice, but it only carried one egg.
