Explorer Post 1010
Lockheed Martin Exploring Program
Launch March 15, 2008

Members of Team 2 and Team 3 traveled to the National Pike Park for one last test launch before they make a run at qualification. There was a prediction of bad weather, but it turned out to be great -- low wind and warm. Team 1 started to the launch site but had issues with their rocket.  They also have an issue with their overall weight of greater than 500 grams.  They don't see how a maximum thrust 24mm engine will get it to 750 feet. We had some successful flights, but lost a rocket in a tree.

Objectives:

  • Team 1
    • Planned to launch with a timer, but were unable to get the ejection charge working.
  • Team 2
    • Decided to use the Executioner from last year as a backup to their V2 and timer effort.  They needed to see how it flew with two eggs.
  • Team 3
    • Needed launch their new red rocket -- both initial flight and a full up qualification test.
    • They need to add weight to the black rocket to see if they can reduce the altitude to 750 feet with an E18-4 engine.
   Lessons
  • The red rocket is almost 500 grams and needs an F39 engine to get to 750 feet.
  • We added too much weight to the black rocket.  It looks like 420g is about right
  • The chute for the Team 3 boosters need to be less than the regular 12 inch.  It needs a spill hole of at least 2 inches. We may also try a 12 inch X-chute
  • The new altimeters produce smoother altitude curves.
  • The double chute configuration creates a spike at ejection -- probably caused by the chute grabbing air.  We may want to use a shock cord and one chute.
  • The Executioner from last year worked great.
