Explorer Post 1010
Lockheed Martin Exploring Program
Launch March 27, 2007

On Tuesday, March 27, we went to the Old National Pike Park for a few last minute flight tests before qualification flights.  It was a warm day with winds mostly under 10mph.  The launch rod was about 5 degrees with the wind. We got off six launches with altimeters and real eggs, but had some serious problems.

Objectives:

  • Get more altimeter scores for TARC qualification rockets.
    • Team 2 - Rear Daddy V3 with E18-4 and F24-4
    • Team 1 - Executioner V2 with E18-4
    • Team 3 - Fat Boy Design V2 with E9-6

Lessons:

  • Remember to check in the boxes for all the rocket parts.  We left the nose cones for the Fat Boy design behind. We did not get a good launch to test the light weight Fat Boy design.
  • The executioner flew OK but a little low and some wind cocking.
  • The Rear Daddy flew low on the E18, but right on with the F24.  Even though the wind was only about 10mph, there was considerable wind cocking. The last flight was a dawn dart because of a failure with the ejection charge.  We will need to use Version 4 for the qualification launches.
  • When building the reloadables, we need to have two kids working each reload -- one to build and one to check/watch.  It is really bad when either the engine or ejection charge fail.
  • We need more F24-4 reloadable kits.
