Launch March 10, 2007

On Saturday, March 10, we went to the Old National Pike Park for a few tests of the rear ejection Big Daddy and the Fat Boy design rockets.

It was a partly cloudy day.  The wind was generally under 10mph, but there were some gusts. We got off six launches with altimeters and real eggs.

Objectives:

  • Get more altimeter scores for TARC qualification.
  • Continue testing the rear ejection.
  • Testing of the NOVAAR launch site launch rods.

Lessons:

  • We continued having problems with the wind.  While we angled the rod a little, apparently not enough. Most of the flights went into the wind and lost a lot of altitude.  The shorter Big Daddy was more affected by the wind than the Fat Boy design.
  • The rear deployment worked well three time in a row.  I think we have this issues solved.
  • We needed an 18 volt battery to ignite the composite motors with the copper top igniters.  The 6 volt didn't seem to work.
  • We need a better launch controller.  And we need to bring a backup.
  • An egg broke on the last Fat Boy design launch.  This is the second time we broke an egg on this rocket with an E15 composite motor.  This may just be too energetic for this design.  We need to make sure the egg is firm in the nose cones.
  • Our scale seems to be broken.  We used one supplied by James' dad.  We need to resolve this issue.
  • We got some good altimeter data.
