Lockheed Martin Exploring Program
Team America Rocketry Challenge
Launch March 12, 2005

We did three test launches of our two stage competition rockets.  Things didn't go as planned.

We launched all three from our platform. We used E9-4 engines in the sustainer, but used different boosters and booster engines for each launch. We also launched one of Mark's rockets.

The winds were from the West at about 10mph with higher gusts.  Temperature was about 35 F.  Clouds came, went, and came again.

Booster #1 burned. Sustainer #1 and cargo #1 were damaged. We are going to need a repair session and rework our plans.

Lessons

1. Cluster boosters are difficult.  We had two launches where all the cluster engines didn't ignite and we didn't get enough vertical thrust.  We need help on cluster ignitions.

2. Igniting the sustainer from the booster engines is a problem.  We need changes in directing the flow of sparks into the sustainer engine.  Maybe we need another type of ignition system.

3. We did good on packing the eggs, but the Tempurpedic foam got very hard in the cold.  We stayed with the large cell foam case.

4. We never got a good test of the parachutes.  There is still a big risk that they will not open correctly.

5. We need to pay more attention to safety around the launch site.  At least once we entered the launch circle when we shouldn't.  We also walked through the center over the launch wires.  We need to check with the Range Safety Officer every time we enter the launch site.
